The world repute contemporary Art Gallery Simon Lee Gallery opened his door in Hong Kong on 2n April 2012. Directed by Simon Lee, the gallery will bring with several would famous Artists' works to private and ornizational collectors.
SIMON LEE, Founder
Simon Lee has been actively involved in the art world for the past thirty years. With a sincere passion for the Arts, a long history of leadership, an entrepreneurial nature, and cutting edge vision, he brings both an informed perspective and a fresh, critical eye to each of his endeavors.
After graduating with a degree in Art History in Melbourne, Simon Lee moved to Paris in the late 80’s to work for the French Ministry of Culture. In 1989 he moved to London after having worked at the Guggenheim in Venice. In 1994 he became the director of Anthony d'Offay gallery and in 1997 he set up his own gallery ‘11 Duke Street.’ In 2002 Simon Lee acquired the premises on Berkeley Street and after being involved in a partnership looking after artists such as Barbara Kruger, Fischli & Weiss, Cindy Sherman, Jenny Holzer, Joseph Kosuth, George Condo, Larry Clark, Robert Therrien, John Baldessari, in September 2006 Simon Lee Gallery was officially founded.
Throughout his career, Lee has utilized the gallery context to provide a platform for both young and established artists. His keen eye has defined the aesthetic for the gallery programme, and his selectively has ensured that represented artists play meaningful role in the trajectory of contemporary art.
KATHERINE SCHAEFER, Asia Director
Katherine is not only enthusiastic and passionate about contemporary art, but is also a great supporter of the globalization of the contemporary art market.
Having studied Bcom PPE at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, Katherine fuelled her passion for the arts by participating in select courses at leading European Institutions such as the École des Beaux Arts in Paris in 2006. She went on to complete her Masters at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London in 2008. Katherine gained her experience and understanding of the contemporary art market through the time she spent working for a globally renowned art advisory firm based in London but wanting to be closer to the artists and exhibition side of the industry, she began her career at Simon Lee Gallery in 2009 where she really cut her teeth and has established her career. She has been educated and gained experience in a diversity of locations such as Cape Town, Paris, Florence, and London, and is now ready to bring her acquired knowledge and skills to Hong Kong.
Katherine bears an entrepreneurial nature, a cutting edge vision, and a dynamic spirit. She thrives in fastpaced and developing environments – as is offered in Hong Kong – and is excited to actively participate in this new milieu in Asia.
