Beijing Commune was founded by critic and curator Leng Lin in 2004. Since its first exhibition opened in April 2005, it has kept trying to establish a new model of promoting Contemporary art in the world, an alternative space which is between museum and gallery.
Beijing Commune is a space where various works of established and emerging Chinese contemporary artists are exhibited, including painting, drawing, sculpture, video and photography, etc. As a motor that drives Chinese contemporary art, it focuses on discovering and promoting the new power of Chinese contemporary art, realizing the special value of Chinese contemporary art in the international arena, and creating new ideas of contemporary art. It also organizes professional conferences and publishes books on Chinese contemporary art.
Since its founding, the space has been noticed by artistic professionals and institutions from all over the world. In February 2006, the previous exhibition “Only One Wall”, which was held in the space in 2005, was launched at Art Space in Sydney, Australia. The “Sublimation: A New Art Project by Zhang Dali” exhibition (held at Beijing Commune in October and November 2005) is selected to attend the coming 6th Gwangju Biennale.
