Flowers
by Tomio Koyama Gallery Tokyo
Location: Towada Art Center
Artist(s): Makiko KUDO, Mika NINAGAWA
Date: 27 Apr - 8 Sep 2013

Towada Art Center will celebrate its fifth anniversary this year. In commemoration of this event, we will organize an exhibition themed around flowers. Flowers were once considered an eternal subject for any country’s art. Their beauty captured people’s hearts a long time ago. Their strength also generated a diverse range of lives. As written in ‘Kadensho' ('The Flower Book'), the lives of Japanese people used to overlap with flowers.

We have commissioned new artists, along with those who have permanent exhibits at Towada Art Center, to create flower-related pieces. The new artworks will be presented both in the gallery and in Towada city. This arrangement will encourage the audience to go into the city from the art center to find the works exhibited out there.

The diverse range of flower-related pieces created by the participating artists (who also show their work internationally) will transcend ethnicity, religion and any conflict between countries. We hope that the artworks will generate sympathy among people and help us summon the courage to face ongoing issues stemming from the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. We hope you enjoy ‘flowers’, as well as the beautiful cherry trees on Kanchogai Dori.
