Shanghart Gallery is very happy to announce this first major overview of the work by one of the central figures of contemporary art in China. Active since the mid-80'ies, Geng Jianyi (born 1962) has managed to create emblematic paintings as well as quieter, hermetic works. His radical and ever changing practice has influenced many generations of artist in China, especially in and around Hangzhou and Shanghai.
Geng Jianyi: WU ZHI ("Ignorance") is a large scale exhibition extending to all rooms of the Shanghai Minsheng Museum. It comprises around 150 works from over 20 years of artistic practice, including paintings, photos, installations and works with paper and books which became a very important media for Geng Jianyi.
While many of the works have been shown all around the world - from the Venice Biennale 1993 to the Belkin Art Gallery in Vancouver recently - this it is the first time that all this works are shown together. The layout of the exhibition has been created in close cooperation with the artist and offers an unique chance to explore and try to understand the practice of one of the most radical figures of contemporary art in China.
