The aim of the Hong Kong Photo Book Awards is to promote the development of digital photographic culture in Hong Kong, while simultaneously paying public respect to the photo book as an autonomous art form.

Advances in technology have brought photography to a stage of development undreamt of even a decade ago. With the advent of digital cameras and their widespread integration in mobile devices, photography is more inexpensive, accessible, convenient and user-friendly than ever before. For millions of people around the globe, photography is an ubiquitous extension of everyday life – a habit rather than a hobby.

The very ubiquity of these images, however, has tended to reduce their impact and value to the viewer. As quickly and easily as they are created, they are glanced at, dismissed, deleted and forgotten. Only rarely is care taken to create an image of substantial meaning or value. Even rarer is the opportunity to preserve these images for future appreciation.

By contrast, the photo book is a product of an extended process of conceptualisation, creation, consideration and refinement. By focusing on this particular medium, we hope this award will re-ignite interest in photography as an art form of lasting and substantial – rather than superficial and fleeting – impact.
