Since its opening in 1988, Hara Museum ARC (the annex to the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art) has introduced works of contemporary art from around the world. This year, the museum celebrates its 20th anniversary and a new beginning with an expansion of its facilities, which includes the addition of the Kankai Pavilion, a new space dedicated to the Hara Rokuro Collection of traditional East Asian art. The Collection comprises a part of the total works collected by the prominent Meiji-era industrialist Rokuro Hara, great-grandfather of the present Hara Museum director Toshio Hara. The design of the pavilion was supervised by the famed Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, who designed the original museum buildings. Isozaki came up with a unique gallery design that references the traditional Japanese shoin style. For its grand opening, the Kankai Pavilion is featuring Kankai Pavilion Opening Exhibition—Beyond Time, Beyond pace (July 27 – September 23, 2008) supervised by Isozaki.
