From 1 April 2001, together with The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo and The National Museum of Art, Osaka, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo became part of an Independent Administrative Institution of National Museum of Art.
As national museums, the four museums have hitherto worked in concert. Under the latest organization, we will be working all the more in cooperation and, at the same time, each museum will continue activities reflecting their individual characteristics.
The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo was opened in 1952 as the first national museum of art in Japan.
The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo consists of the Museum and Crafts Gallery in Kitanomaru Koen, near the Imperial Palace, and the National Film Center in Kyobashi, which is next to Ginza. Activities are undertaken with the view of providing a systematic overview of modern Japanese art within the context of modern art all over the world and widely promoting an interest in art.
The actual work comprises:
1. Collecting modern artworks, films, and related references mainly of the 20th century and preserving those works in suitable environments.
2. Conducting continuous surveys and research on works in the Museum Collection and other art-related activities in and outside Japan
3. Organizing permanent and special exhibitions of the artworks, film shows, and other activities based on the results of such studies.
The Museum and Crafts Gallery organize permanent exhibitions providing historical views of the diverse development of fine art and craftwork in Japan during 20th century. They also hold special exhibitions based on different themes and issues.
The National Film Center shows films regularly at the Cinema 1 hall on the 2nd floor under specific themes focusing, for example, on a particular director, period, or region. Books and periodicals on cinema can be viewed in the library on the 4th floor and non-film materials on cinema are on display in the gallery on the 7th floor.
The Museum, Crafts Gallery, and Film Center each organize lectures on the special exhibitions or featured screenings, serial lectures on the particular themes, and gallery talks, which take place periodically in the exhibitions galleries. Exhibition catalogues are published to provide further understanding of the works and newsletters entitled Gendai no Me and NFC Newsletter are issued every other month as reports on the museum activities.
