After several years of development, the Department of Modern Art (formerly of the Seoul National University Museum) has evolved into an independent institution with the establishment of the new Seoul National University Museum of Art (MoA). The MoA is the first university art museum in Korea dedicated exclusively to modern and contemporary art. Designed by world-renown architect Rem Koolhaas, the museum was constructed and donated by the Samsung Cultural Foundation. The MoA was completed in October 2005, and having already attained the status of majestic campus landmark, is now open to the public.
Even as the MoA will seek to attract a broad national and international audience, one of its most important roles will be to contribute to the academic mission and life of the University through the teaching points underpinning its exhibitions.
The Museum holds collections representing 50 years in the progression of modern Korean art. In addition, a planned dynamic schedule of special exhibitions and interpretative programs will connect visitors with the rich artistic legacy of the past and the artwork of the avant-garde from almost every continent. Within the grounds of this phenomenal example of museum architecture, a rotating series of temporary exhibitions drawn from the works of artists seminal to the history of art, as well as emerging artists deserving greater attention, will present our students, faculty, staff and visitors with an array of opportunities to engage in the arts. Ongoing lecture series, tours, open class sessions, films and video will challenge our understanding of the history and the role of the arts in society. It is my goal that the MoA will provide a stimulating environment to experience and learn about the visual arts.
This Web site is designed to provide you with access to the MoA and the Museum's collections, exhibitions and programs. We invite you to use this site to its fullest and to become an active participant in the museum and its array of activities for all audiences throughout the year.
