The history of the University Museum dates back to 1967 when the Modern Art Gallery of Hongik College was set up with the collection donated the former chairman of Hongik University. The Gallery was created on the second floor of the University Library in order to exhibit art works such as graphic, sculpture, and calligraphy pieces. The size and collection of the museum has since grown steadily to include works of classic art and folk art items. It was in 1971 that the Gallery was officially designated as the University Museum. In 1974, the University Museum moved to Moon Heon Kwan, the tallest building on campus, where it has served the University community ever since.
