The Substation is Singapore’s first independent arts centre with a focus on the contemporary arts. Established in 1990 by the late Kuo Pao Kun, it is known for its pioneering and experimental arts programming, as an incubator for emerging Singapore artists and its sense of adventure. From cross-artform collaborations in the 1990s to today’s productions of theatre, film, visual and performance art, artists look to The Substation for innovative artistic initiatives.
Many of The Substation’s Associate Artists and collaborators are now award-winning and respected artists; we are proud to have supported them through their development. We believe in developing depth and diversity in Singapore arts and we provide resources for artists to test new ideas and to communicate these to the public.
The Substation also serves the wider community and civil society in Singapore, as a place where diverse sectors meet in dialogue through forums and exhibitions. We like to think of The Substation as a true “home for the arts” where audiences and artists comfortably interact.
The Substation is a non-profit organisation and registered IPC that relies on funds raised through private channels, including individual and corporate gifts. It’s easy to support us: simply attend an event, take a course, buy tickets, sign up as a Friend of The Substation, or donate online (www.substation.org). We hope the events in this brochure will ignite your passion for the arts.
